Free document, spreadsheet and slide editors for school

What's free

Every editor is free, with no time limit and no account:

• Docs for essays and reports: headings, lists, tables, images, comments, a table of contents, equations in a subset of LaTeX, a resume template, and read aloud with the browser's voices. Saves .docx.
• Sheets for lab data and budgets: more than 70 functions, charts, pivot tables and .xlsx or .csv export.
• Slides for presentations: themes, shapes, speaker notes and a full-screen presenter mode with a timer. Opens and saves .pptx.
• The PDF editor for filling in and signing worksheets and forms, highlighting readings and adding notes, plus Image Studio for cropping and converting pictures.

PDF redaction, file encryption, OCR on the first page of each PDF and PDF Tools jobs of up to 3 files are free too.

No installs on school computers

School computers often block software installs. Vault Studio Pro is a web page, so it runs wherever a current browser does: Chrome on a Chromebook, Edge on a school PC, Safari on a Mac. Open the app, pick a tool, and open a file or start a new one. If a managed device blocks the site or browser storage, your IT team can allow it.

Privacy for student work

Students don't create an account, so there is no profile, email address or class list stored with us. Files are opened and edited in the browser tab and aren't uploaded, and the pages carry no ads, analytics or tracking scripts. The one exception is dictation, which uses the browser's own speech service (Google in Chrome, Apple in Safari) and asks before it starts. Follow your school's rules on which tools students may use; not needing accounts often makes that conversation simpler, but it's still the school's call.

Shared computers: save your work

Work is autosaved in the browser on that computer, not in the cloud. That has two consequences on a shared or lab computer:

1. Save your file (Ctrl+S, or Cmd+S on a Mac) to a USB stick, your school drive or your own storage before you leave. If the computer clears browser data at logout, unsaved projects are lost.
2. If the computer doesn't clear browser data, the next person using the same profile could open your projects, because browser storage isn't encrypted. Delete them in the app when you're done.

Working offline

For a laptop that goes home without Wi-Fi, open the Privacy Audit panel while online and choose "Make available offline". The browser then stores every tool, so the app opens and the editors keep working with no connection. Without that step, the app reopens after a first visit, but tools you haven't used yet, and OCR, would need the network.

For teachers

• Open a class handout as .docx, edit it, and save it again without uploading it to a converter site.
• Black out student names on a sample essay before showing it to the class, using PDF redaction or the blackout tool in Image Studio.
• Mark up a PDF of a reading with highlights and sticky notes, which other PDF readers show as comments.
• Keep grade spreadsheets on your own device; lock a copy in the File Safe before emailing it.

Where another tool is better

There is no real-time collaboration, no class assignment system and no connection to a learning management system. For group writing, a cloud editor wins; see our comparison with Google Docs.
