What Image Studio does
Image Studio is a quick editor for the image jobs that come up alongside documents: straightening a phone photo of a form, cropping a screenshot, blurring a name before posting, or converting a picture to a smaller format. Online image editors usually upload your picture first. Image Studio works on it in the page.
How to edit an image
- Open the app, choose Image Studio, and open an image or drop it onto the window.
- Crop, adjust and mark it up. Undo and redo are always available.
- Export as WebP, JPEG or PNG with the quality you choose, copy it to the clipboard, or send it to Docs or Slides.
Crop, rotate and adjust
- Crop freely or to 1:1, 16:9, 4:3, 9:16 or 1.91:1 (a common link-preview size).
- Rotate by 90 degrees and flip.
- Brightness, contrast, saturation, grayscale, sepia, blur and invert sliders.
- Presets, including a black-and-white "document scan" look that makes photos of paper easier to read, and a one-click enhance preset.
- Frame styles that add a soft shadow or a floating effect for presentations.
Mark up and hide details
- Pen, arrows and boxes to point things out.
- Solid blackout boxes and mosaic pixelation to hide names, faces, card numbers or addresses.
- A text stamp watermark, for example "Copy for rental application only".
When you export, the result is a new flat image, so blacked-out areas are gone from the file. Pixelation is weaker than a solid box: large, blocky pixelation is hard to reverse, while a light mosaic over short text can sometimes be guessed. Use blackout for anything sensitive.
Cut-outs and text recognition
Colour-key cut-out removes a solid background, such as a green screen or a white product backdrop, to give a transparent PNG. It works by colour, so it's best with plain, evenly lit backgrounds rather than busy photos. OCR reads English text from an image so you can copy it, using the same on-device engine as the PDF editor.
Converting formats
Exporting to WebP usually gives the smallest file for the web, JPEG is the most widely accepted for photos, and PNG keeps sharp edges and transparency for screenshots and logos. The quality setting trades file size against detail. Exported images are new files, so camera metadata such as location isn't copied into them. Check the result if that matters to you.
Limits worth knowing
- It is not a layered editor. Edits are applied to one image, with undo history while you work.
- Images larger than 16,384 pixels on a side or 100 megapixels are too big for the browser canvas.
- Animated GIFs are edited as a single still frame.
Common questions
Is my photo uploaded for processing?
No. The image is decoded and edited with your browser's own canvas inside the page, and the exported file is created on your device.
Can I edit several images at once?
Image Studio edits one image at a time. To combine several images into a single PDF, use merge in the PDF editor's PDF Tools.
