Who each is for
Adobe Acrobat is for people whose work runs on PDFs: legal and compliance teams, publishers, agencies, anyone who signs with certificates or needs PDF standards. It is a desktop app for Windows and macOS, with web and mobile companions and cloud services. Acrobat Reader is free for viewing, commenting and Fill & Sign; editing needs a paid plan.
Vault Studio Pro is for people who need to edit, redact, fill, sign and OCR a PDF now and then, alongside documents, spreadsheets and slides, without installing software, creating an account or sending the file to anyone's server.

Choose Acrobat if…
- You need certificate-based digital signatures, which Acrobat supports with digital IDs, or signature workflows through Acrobat Sign.
- You need a redaction process that also sanitizes the file: Acrobat Pro can remove metadata, comments, hidden layers and other hidden information when you apply redactions.
- You produce documents with Bates numbers, which Acrobat Pro adds across several files.
- You OCR scans in languages other than English.
- You edit the text and layout of PDFs directly, rather than annotating on top of them.
- Your organization already licenses Acrobat and manages it centrally.
Choose Vault Studio Pro if…
- You need real redaction without paying for Acrobat Pro. Here it is free: each redacted page is rebuilt as an image with the boxes burned in, so the text under them is removed.
- You don't want the file to leave your computer. Everything runs in the browser, and the page's security policy refuses connections to other sites. See how the privacy works.
- You can't install software, or you don't want an account.
- You also need a word processor, spreadsheet and slide editor, all in the same place, for $99 a year for Pro, or free.
Limits of Vault Studio Pro to know first
- No PDF metadata removal yet. Check document properties in another tool before you share.
- No search-and-redact; you box each item. No redaction log or certificate of redaction.
- Redacted pages lose their selectable text (other pages keep it). OCR can make them searchable again.
- OCR recognises English only: the first page of each PDF is free, every page with Pro.
- It isn't a layout editor: you add content on top of pages. Signatures are images, not certificate-based digital signatures.
- No Bates numbering. Our sister product PDF Vault handles Bates numbering, merging and compressing as single-purpose tools.
PDF Tools jobs of up to 3 files are free. Pro costs $9 for a one-off Week Pass, $15 a month, $99 a year or $299 once, and every Pro feature is unlocked for the first 7 days with no card. During the launch, a Founders plan costs $59 a year for as long as you renew (until 2026-12-01). See pricing.
Using both

Common questions
Is Vault Studio Pro a replacement for Acrobat Pro?
For some jobs. It covers redaction, annotation, form filling, image signatures, OCR in English and basic page tools. It does not offer certificate-based digital signatures, metadata sanitizing, Bates numbering, search-and-redact or OCR in other languages. If you rely on those, keep Acrobat Pro.
Does redaction in Vault Studio Pro work the same way as in Acrobat?
The goal is the same, removing the content rather than covering it, but the method differs. Vault Studio Pro rebuilds each redacted page as an image with the boxes burned in, so those pages lose their text layer. Acrobat Pro removes the marked content and can also sanitize hidden information such as metadata.
Do I need an account for either?
Acrobat Standard and Pro need an Adobe ID, and the app checks the subscription online on first launch and at least every 30 days. Vault Studio Pro has no accounts; a Pro license key is checked on your device.
