Who each is for
LibreOffice, coordinated by The Document Foundation, is for anyone who wants a full desktop office suite without a subscription: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw and more, for Windows, macOS and Linux. The latest release when we checked was 26.8, and its release notes say no part of the suite needs network access to work. Its native format is OpenDocument, and it opens and saves Microsoft Office formats.
Vault Studio Pro is for people who can't or don't want to install software, and who want PDF redaction, OCR and file encryption in the same app as their documents, spreadsheets and slides.

Choose LibreOffice if…
- You can install software and want a full office suite for free.
- You need macros, advanced spreadsheet functions, long documents with complex styles, or OpenDocument files.
- You redact at scale: LibreOffice's automatic redaction can find text by regular expression or predefined pattern, and it can strip personal information from files when you save.
- You sign documents or PDFs with a certificate, which LibreOffice supports.
- You use Linux on the desktop.
Choose Vault Studio Pro if…
- You're on a Chromebook, a locked-down work or school PC, or someone else's computer, and can't install anything.
- You want to annotate, fill in, sign, OCR and redact PDFs in the same app. Redaction is free and rebuilds each redacted page as an image; see how it works.
- You want to lock files in a password-encrypted .vault with the File Safe.
- You prefer a smaller, simpler set of tools that opens in a browser tab.
Limits of Vault Studio Pro to know first
- It does far less than LibreOffice in every editor: no macros, fewer spreadsheet functions, simpler layouts.
- No OpenDocument (.odt, .ods, .odp) support.
- No automatic or pattern-based redaction, and no PDF metadata removal yet.
- Offline use needs a one-time "Make available offline" step while online.
- Projects saved in the browser aren't encrypted at rest.
The editors, redaction and encryption are free. Pro costs $9 for a one-off Week Pass, $15 a month, $99 a year or $299 once, and every Pro feature is unlocked for the first 7 days with no card. Common questions
Is LibreOffice more private than Vault Studio Pro?
Both process files on your own computer. LibreOffice is an installed desktop program that its developers say needs no network access to work. Vault Studio Pro runs in the browser; after "Make available offline" it also runs without a network. If you can install software, LibreOffice is an excellent private choice.
Which one redacts better?
LibreOffice has manual redaction and automatic redaction by text, regular expression or predefined pattern, and can remove personal information from files on saving. Vault Studio Pro redacts PDFs you box by hand and does not remove metadata yet. For large or pattern-based redaction jobs, LibreOffice does more.
Why would I use Vault Studio Pro if LibreOffice is free?
Mostly when you cannot or do not want to install software: a school Chromebook, a locked work PC, a borrowed computer. It also opens PDFs for annotation, form filling, OCR and redaction in one app, and encrypts files into password-protected .vault files.
